Tribal Background ~ Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to make a neat tribal effect I used in my Jounouchi (Yu-Gi-Oh!) Wallpaper.

Most of this tutorial is just distorting the basics in photoshop, so I wont be showing a preview of what your image should look like through every step. The colors to start with could be anything, but I chose one medium/dark color, and one light color.

First batch (3 Steps):

1. Filter > Render > Clouds

2. Image > Adjustment > Auto Contrast

3. Filter > Distort > Twirl (I did 150, anywhere between 125-200 should be fine)

After that, you should have something that looks like my preview on the left.

Next, Batch 2 (2 Steps)

4. Blur > Motion Blur (I used 200, but 180-220 should be ok as well)

5. Filter > Distort > Wave (The properties I used are shown on the left. If you want to change it a little, I'd only change the Generators > 20-150)

Batch 3 (1 Step)

6. Filter > Distort > Twirl (My setting was at 600, you can try anywhere from 500 to 700)

Only one step here, but by now you should have something that looks like mine of the left.

Last batch (1-2 Step)

7. Filter > Artistic > Cutout (The properties I used are shown in my sample image.)

8. Now this is optional, but basically necessary. Make your background you wish to use, then place this layer above the background layers. Choose a layer type, in my Jounouchi wallpaper I used Hard Light.

If you dont like the colors you used and wish to change it, you can either hit ctrl+b and change them, or make a new Hue/Saturation Layer then merge the layers together (ctrl+e). Merging the layer will set the Hue/Saturation color to the layer you merged it with, only.
