Powers of Kirin - Being Written by Jennifer Rinehart
“Cerady!” Moirae screamed as she ran after me.
I could hear her but I couldn’t stop running, and I continued to run until I reached the park. I stopped and rested on the marble fountain, I thought back to everything that just happened. But, “What just happened?”
No more than a minute after I sat down, Moirae caught up to me. She stood in front of me for a minute as she regained her breathe, then sat down beside me.
“Are you ok?” she asked.
“Yeah…” I replied, barely in a whisper still trying to catch my breath. I had so many questions, I was so confused, and my memory was already in a haze. “What just happened?” I asked her.
“You did it. What I did.” She said.
“What you did?” I tried to think. “You mean the daggers?”
“Yeah, only, yours stayed a light.” She said calmly. “But that’s probably a good thing” she said with a small tone of humor. “If you actually got something like I did, I think those boys would be even more freaked out than they were” she said, this time with a smile.
I just looked at her, I wasn’t amused.
“Hey, you made fun of me after I did it.” She said partly teasing.
“Yeah, but you didn’t do it in front of the four most popular guys at school.” I stated coldly. “I don’t even know how I’m going to explain what just happened to them. I can’t even explain what just happened to myself!”
“Don’t worry so much! We could try to play it off as a reflection off of a mirror or something.” She said, now rising to her feet. “C’mon, we need to go back. We still have to tell Andrea what happened yesterday, and tell her what happened just now.”
“I can’t go back there already! What if Yuuki and them are still there? They’re going to ask me about it!” I cried.
“You’ll have to face them sooner or later, and I told you, just tell them it was a reflection from a pocket mirror or something. Let’s go!” she said grabbing my hand and pulling me along.
. . . . . .
When we got back to the school, Andrea and Kyrene were standing in front talking. People were being picked up in cars or walking home, so I assumed practice must have ended. Moirae and I walked over to Andrea and Kyrene, looking for the boys along the way. I didn’t see them anywhere though, and Moirae never said anything that implied she did. As we were walking towards Andrea and Kyrene, they noticed us and ran over.
“Cerady! What was that from before?” Kyrene asked me.
“I’m not sure…” I replied, “Did anyone else see it? Did Yuuki and the others see it?”
“How could they not!” she replied cheerfully. Although when she saw my face she changed her expression quickly. “What’s wrong? I don’t think anyone saw anything other than Yuuki, the others, and I…” she trailed off.
“Remember when we were telling you about the daggers I got?” Moirae asked Kyrene. “Well, that was the light I saw before the daggers appeared.”
“That was it?” Kyrene asked getting excited again.
“Ok, ok, ok! I can’t take it anymore! What’s going on!?” Andrea exclaimed.
The three of us turned to face Andrea, who we apparently forgotten was there.
“So who wants to tell the story?” I asked Moirae and Kyrene.
. . . . . .
Moirae and Kyrene covered the story from before, about the shadow-lady, while I was still dwelling in the most recent events on the soccer field. Kyrene actually told the story quite well, considering she only heard it once. What’s more, she even seemed to be enjoying everything that was happening.
“So let me get this straight… you conjured up spheres of light that transformed into daggers?” she asked pointing to Moirae. “And you… conjured a light, almost transforming them into daggers?” she asked now pointing to me.
“I don’t know?” I replied back, “Thing is… Moirae had two lights. I only had one.”
“Maybe yours didn’t take the next step? Mine started off as one light, remember?” Moirae asked.
“I guess, but it happened so fast for you.” I said.
“Well yeah. I was trying to guard you from some freakish shadow clone. I wasn’t trying to take my anger out on a high school boy.” Moirae replied partly teasing again.
“Whatever! I don’t care. All I know is, Yuuki and his friends saw that light and now I have to figure out some logical explanation as to how I did it. Otherwise they’re going to think that I’m a freak and I’ll never hear the end of it.” I said quickly.
“Well, you don’t have to worry too much.” Moirae replied with a smile. “Cause Yuuki already thinks you’re a freak anyways.”
“Yeah thanks for the encouragement.” I said sarcastically.
“No problem!” said Moirae still smiling.
“The two of you bickering isn’t getting us anywhere.” said Andrea butting in.
“She’s right. We need to figure out what this ‘light’ is that both of you saw. And… we still need to figure out why we transformed into animals the other day.” Kyrene added.
“Oy, don’t remind me.” I said sadly. “If only we could find that guy that we saw in the park… remember he said a lot of weird things? If you think back on it, he kind of mentioned that we’d turn into animals, he was just really vague about it.” I paused for a moment to try and recall more of the conversation. “I think he mentioned something about a ‘problem’ that we’d have to get rid of too…”
“He did say something like that huh?” Moirae confirmed. “I wonder what else he said that had hidden meaning to it?”
We all stood around thinking about it for a few minutes when we heard a car’s horn. We all turned around and it was the same man that answered the door at Andrea’s house.
“Oh! My Dad is finally here!” Andrea shouted. “How about we all go back to my house and think this over some more?” she asked.
All of us exchanged looks, agreed, and hopped into her Father’s forest green van.
. . . . . .
The night was long and moved slowly, but we covered everything we thought we should. Kyrene, Moirae and I filled in Andrea about what happened at the grocery store, we went into detail about our transformation stories, and we discussed what just happened at soccer practice.
“I don’t think you’re going to be able to get away with some reflection excuse” Andrea said glaring at Moirae and I.
“Well it’s not like we have much choice,” Moirae argued, “I’d like to see you come up with something better!”
I let out a heavy sigh as I watched Moirae and Andrea argue. We were working on eleven P.M. now and it was obvious we were getting tired. I continued to watch them for a good while until I finally decided to cut them off.
“You guys!” I screamed, “That’s enough. I think we should call it a day.”
“How can you say that! Things are just starting to get interesting” Kyrene said with an awkward disappointed smile on her face.
“Well, I don’t know, and I don’t care. It’s getting late though, and I need some sleep.” I stated bluntly. I was literally exhausted. I ran away so many times today, I conjured something that I didn’t think I was capable of, and on top of it all, I now had to stress over an excuse to tell the boys.
“I think sleep is a good idea.” Moirae said agreeing with me.
Andrea shrugged like she didn’t care, and Kyrene gave a little whine. Moirae, Kyrene and I gathered our things and headed out of Andrea’s house.
“You guys better let me know if anything else happens. And I don’t want to be the last to know this time!” She yelled at us as we were walking out her front door.
“Ok!” I screamed back at her.
Moirae and I walked Kyrene home, and then I walked Moirae home. After Moirae was safely inside and I made sure her parents weren’t freaking out because of the time, I headed home myself.
The night was beautiful despite all of the events of today. Per usual, I decided to take my everyday route home through the park. The moon was full and the lake near the park was clear and vibrant blue. The fountain was the most beautiful of all though, with its elegant granite and white marble. The large dragon on top of the fountain seemed to be more inspiring than usual, only emphasized by the water surrounding it that seemed to shimmer under the moonlight.
I stood in the middle of the park for a moment and closed my eyes. I could feel a slight gust of wind flow through my hair and wished so much that I could enjoy this solitude forever. Perhaps even play my violin with the gentle touch of wind on my face for a little while.
It was getting late and I knew I had to get home, so I looked up at the dragon on top of the fountain one last time. As I turned towards the direction of my house I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. Startled, I turned my head quickly to see what it was, but nothing was there.
Sort of confused I turned back to head home again, and there it was. I could swear time stopped for an instant as I just glared into the eyes of the creature I defied at the grocery store. It was the shadow-lady, she was just standing there, staring at me, with ice cold black eyes.
I could feel myself tense up as I watched it conjure a black orb. “Run!” was my first instinct but my body was too stiff to react. I didn’t know what to do and there was no one else around. I braced myself for what I knew was coming and like earlier that day, I felt something click.
“My light appeared.” I could swear I thought to myself, but it was more of a feeling than a thought. I reached out for the light just as Moirae had at the grocery store, and felt the warm sensation of light transform into a cool sensation of a metal rod. As the light disappeared and I took a look at what I was holding onto, I noticed it wasn’t a metal rod, but it was the hilt of a sword.
The sword was light in weight and didn’t resemble swords that I was used to seeing. The blade was thin and skinny, smaller than an average blade, but bigger than a fencing sword. The hilt was gold and carved with shapes of tiger stripes with fangs that came outwards on each side. At the end of the hilt where the blade began, was a red jewel that almost seemed to glow with a sense of pride.
“A sword” a voice echoed in my mind, until I realized it was my own. A sound from ahead brought me back to the moment and I quickly raised my sword to defend myself from whatever was coming.
The orb from the shadow-lady flew at me. I gripped my sword and swung it through the air in attempts to slice the orb in two. It all happened so quickly that I didn’t consider the consequences. The orb indeed split into two, but both slices flew past my sides and into the ground, forming black spots on the ground.
I turned my attention back towards the shadow-lady. “Now what?” I questioned. My sword pulsed once. I looked down at my sword and it pulsed again. “What?” I thought, trying to understand what the sword was trying to tell me. The sword pulsed again and the red jewel near the hilt began to glow.
I looked ahead of me to see that the shadow-lady had formed another orb and had just thrown it directly my way. I gripped my sword for a second time and sliced through the air to cut the orb. This time not only did the orb slice into two, but my sword released some sort of strong force. Not a force like power, but more like wind or air.
The force hit the shadow-lady and it flew back slamming into the ground. I looked around for anything that could help me, but there was nothing and no one around. I looked back to my sword and tried to get my feelings across. I needed something to at least get away so I can regroup with Moirae and the others.
The jewel in my blade shined again, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I trusted my blade. I lifted my sword up to defend myself for a third time, when a bright light emitted from the jewel in my sword and engulfed everything, including me.
