Powers of Kirin - Being Written by Jennifer Rinehart
Moirae and I finally made it to my house and were resting on my sofa in the living room. After we got out of the alleyway, Moirae’s daggers returned to spheres of light and disappeared. Neither of us complained though, how odd would it have looked for two teenage girls to be running down the street, one injured, and the other with two daggers in hand?
Although, now we had a problem…with the daggers gone, who would believe our story? How could we prove it? It seemed like all I could think of were questions, and more questions. All of the same questions from before came to mind, and none of them provided with any answers.
“Do you think anyone saw us?” I asked Moirae, who was now looking a little gloomy.
“I hope not… if they did, we can expect to see the police soon.” she said quietly. “When is your Mom going to be home?”
“Not until later tonight, unless she stays at work again. Why?” I asked.
“I don’t know… didn’t you find it strange?” she asked as she looked up at me.
“Which part?” I asked partly joking, but Moirae didn’t seem too thrilled. “Sorry, it’s just a lot of things have been happening lately, and I can’t explain any of them any better than what happened today.”
I pulled up my shirt a little to see if the orb left a mark on me. It was a little red, but it didn’t appear to be bruising, and it wasn’t bleeding. I put my shirt back down and looked at Moirae again.
“Whatever happened, we don’t have much of anything to back up our story. It was lucky that Andrea and Kyrene changed into animals just like we did, but I don’t think they’ll be able to relate to this one.” I added.
“I’m gonna hit that guy next time I see him” Moirae said bluntly. “Everything was normal until he showed up.”
I assumed she was referring to the cloaked man in the park, so I didn’t reply. I walked over to my television set and picked up the remote. I sat back on my sofa and began flipping through the channels; maybe someone had some information about the store. I stopped at the city’s local news channel on channel five and listened intently.
“Moirae look!” I said pointing to the T.V. Sure enough they were filming the store, but now it was on fire.
“How’d that happen?!” Moirae shrieked, “It wasn’t on fire when we left it!”
I couldn’t turn away from the screen; I just shook my head to signify that I didn’t know. So much damage was done in the time that Moirae and I had left. There were two fire trucks, three police cars, and three ambulances outside of the store now. People were being loaded on stretchers, and the police officers were armed, shielding behind their cars.
“What’s going to happen to that lady?” I asked quietly, almost to myself. I felt horrible. We watched that shadow just swallow her, then we watched the shadow hurt innocent people, and there was nothing we could do about it. Sure Moirae was given some daggers, but without experience or knowledge, how could we have handled that situation?
“This sucks!” Moirae screamed getting to her feet and throwing a pillow at the T.V.
“Hey! Don’t take it out on the T.V! We need it to see what happens!” I yelled at her.
“But I didn’t do anything! I had them, I had something, but I couldn’t do anything…” She ranted and sat back down slowly.
“Neither of us could do anything. Honestly, what were we going to do?” I questioned her, “Turn into a cat and scratch its feet to death? Turn into bird and peck its eyes out? Just because you had those daggers doesn’t mean you knew what to do with them. If you attacked directly you might have hurt the lady it took over!” I lectured.
. . . . . .
The rest of the night went by uneventful. The lady ended up getting away, five people had minor injuries, and a couple were said to have got off with slight trauma. Moirae ended up staying the night so that tomorrow we could wake up and head directly over to Andrea’s and Kyrene’s house. We had no idea how they’d react to our story, but we had to tell them all the same.
Morning came quick, with little room for play. I want to say I slept well, but I did not. And I don’t think Moirae got much more sleep than I did. “At least I got some sleep” I tried to think positively. I think we both passed out instantly, but we were mentally elsewhere and physically stressed. I was weak from getting hit by some freakish orb, and she was exhausted from handling those mysterious daggers.
We decided that we’d visit Kyrene first, because she at least seemed easier to explain the situation to. I had never been to her house before, and I was amazed when I saw it. It was a medium sized home, but it had so much style that it looked like one of those country styled houses you’d see in a real estate magazine.
The house was a shade of eggshell with orange-red trimming. The grass was green with small circular bushes on the edges of the lawn near the sidewalk. There was a cement pathway you could walk up between the left and right side of the lawn. To get to the porch you had to walk up four stairs. The porch was the same color of eggshell as the house, and the door was a darker shade of the trimming. When you finally reached the porch, you were welcomed by a small white iron table with two matching chairs, and a welcome mat that read “Home is Sweet”.
Moirae and I looked around, almost nervous to be there and having second thoughts. I looked at Moirae for a moment and decided not to give it another thought. I rang the doorbell that when rung, sounded like a melody you’d hear from an elevator in a department store. Moments later, a lady with very long brown hair, almost down to her knees, answered the door.
“Uh, Hi… is Kyrene here?” I asked as the lady looked at both of us puzzled.
“Kyrene? Oh sure! Come in, come in!” she said happily as her first reaction to us completely vanished.
We walked into her house, into a small hallway when my critique kicked in. “This color is everywhere!” I thought instantly as I looked around. The eggshell color of the house that was outside was the same color as the hallway walls, and most of the rooms I looked into. The floor in the hallway was tiled, and the same color of the trimming outside. The carpets within the house were a shade of sand, very bland, but kind of elegant. The furniture however wasn’t that same color of orange-red, but was mixed tones of greens, browns and tans.
The long haired lady eventually took us to a room that I assumed to be the living room, and gestured for us to sit down. Moirae and I sat down on a tan sofa and then looked up at the lady expectantly. The lady stared at us for a moment and beamed a big happy smile. Then as if something just struck her attention, she jumped up in excitement.
“Let me get Kyrene, I’ll be right back okay? Don’t go anywhere now!” she sort of sang as she walked out of the room and down the hall.
Moments later Kyrene walked into the room, I could tell she was surprised to see us there. “Hi guys…” she said kind of confused as she walked over to Moirae and I and sat down on a nearby chair.
“Hey” Moirae replied back with the same tone in her voice as Kyrene’s.
For a moment all of us sat in silence, just kind of staring away from each other. It was a little awkward to be honest. Not being able to take it anymore, I finally spoke up.
“Who was the lady that answered the door?” I asked.
“Oh that was my Mom…” she replied looking over at us. She must have seen the expressions on our face because she quickly added “Don’t worry about her. I just don’t get many visitors so she was a little excited”.
“I see…” I replied, now exchanging glances with Moirae. “Ok well… we’re here because something happened yesterday…” I began, now looking back at Kyrene. She was giving me her undivided attention.
I didn’t know where to start, even though I tried to rehearse the story in my mind on our way to her house. “Did you see the local news last night by chance?” I asked her.
“Yeah I did, my Mom likes to watch that stuff every evening during dinner.” Kyrene replied, “Bizarre right? About that lady at the store…”
“What would you say if… we knew something that nobody else knows, about that lady?” Moirae asked Kyrene.
Kyrene looked at Moirae completely confused and very interested. “Like what?” She asked.
“Well yesterday Moirae was going to come over to my house… “ I told her, “because we wanted to go to the park on the way home, you know where we saw that guy, well anyways… we wanted to see if we could find anything, but we couldn’t find anything for the longest time…”
“That’s when we saw her” Moirae cut in. “It wasn’t her fault that she was doing those things… at least I don’t think it was… but we saw this other thing that looked like a shadow or something. And it kinda swallowed her up!”
“What?” Kyrene asked in disbelief.
“Yeah it’s hard to explain” I tried to back up Moirae, “at first the shadow thing was just observing the lady, then it took on the shape of her, and turned her into a little circle ball thing, kind of like a bubble. I don’t know how it did it to be honest… but inside the bubble something was moving, I think it was her soul but we don’t know. Then after she was in a bubble, it ate her!”
“And what’s weird is, nobody else saw it happen but us!” Moirae yelled in a whispered tone. “Then Cerady decided it’d be a great idea to just follow the thing, and that’s when we ended up at the grocery store.”
“Yeah blame it on me” I said in a sarcastic tone. “It was my idea, but we decided to follow the thing.” I stated glancing at Moirae. “When we got to the store it went berserk! It started conjuring some sort of orb things that were glowing black, yes, glowing black. Then it started throwing them at people!”
“We didn’t know what to do so we hid behind a register” Moirae added, “then Cerady jumped out from behind the register and started throwing apples at it. Completely stupid…”
“Well sorry for trying to do something” I cut her off, “we couldn’t just sit there, it was hurting people!” I argued.
“Whatever, it was a dangerous move and you know it.” Moirae continued to argue back. “She got hit by one of those black orbs, and was about to get hit by another-“
“Hey I dodged one, give me a little credit” I cut in.
“-and was about to get hit by another” Moirae repeated and continued, now getting a little annoyed. “So I had to step in. But I didn’t know what to do, and just as it was about to hit me with one of those orb thingies, a light appeared.”
“Yeah, from my point of view, or from what I can remember, the lights were in two spheres and just kinda appeared in front of her, then went straight to her hands.” I said.
“Yeah, and when I went to grasp them, they changed into knives, or daggers rather.” Moirae confirmed trying to recall the events. “You should have seen it, it was so cool! I was just cutting through its orbs as it was throwing them at me, and then I told Cerady to run when I gave the signal.” Moirae accounted proudly.
“So when I felt the timing was right” Moirae continued, “I angled my dagger and pushed one of its orbs back to it. It hit her dead on! We ran out of there as fast as we could…”
“-and then the police drove up right after.” I finished Moirae’s sentence, “Then we hid in an alleyway and headed home.”
“But then what happened to the lady?” Kyrene asked.
“We don’t know” I replied, “When we got home we turned on the TV, and that’s when we saw what you probably saw. By that time the lady had disappeared and the store had caught on fire.”
“Yeah, it sucks.” Moirae stated simply. “We couldn’t do anything… we were there… but we couldn’t do anything…”
“So yeah,” I sighed, “first we see a strange guy, then turn into animals, and now this. We thought it might be connected somehow so we wanted to tell you and Andrea.”
“So Andrea knows?” asked Kyrene.
“Not yet,” Moirae answered, “we thought you’d be easier to tell first.”
“I see…” replied Kyrene. “Well, let’s go visit Andrea then.”
“Wait, that’s it?” I asked Kyrene, she was taking the news a little too easily.
“Yeah.” She replied.
I looked at her for a moment, confused. She gave me a little smile and a little nod to signify that it was ok, and that was enough for me. “I wonder if Andrea will be this easy to tell.” I wondered.
The three of us left the house, but not before her Mother rushed out with sodas for us. We gave our thanks and headed towards Andrea’s house. Just like Kyrene’s house, I’ve never been to Andrea’s house before. It was on the other side of town so it took us a while to get to, but we got to pass the park on the way, so obviously I wasn’t complaining.
When we got there I was even more amazed than I had been at Kyrene’s. The house was huge! It was two stories tall, a cream color for the base, and had navy blue trimming. The yard was similar to Kyrene’s in the aspect that there was a little walkway that lead to the front porch.
Andrea’s porch was larger than Kyrene’s. Instead of having only enough room for a small table and two small chairs, there was enough room for an entire dinning room set if you wanted. The door was a baby blue, or sky blue color, and in place of a button for the doorbell, there was a string you tugged on.
Moirae tugged on the doorbell and moments later someone came to the door. It was a middle aged man, possibly Andrea’s father. He had dark spiky hair, dark colored eyes, and stood very tall; maybe 6 foot something. “Hello.” said the man.
“Hi, is Andrea here?” asked Moirae.
“No she’s not, can I take a message?” he offered.
“Uhm… do you know where we can find her?” I asked.
“Are you friends from school?” he asked.
“Yeah.” Said Kyrene.
“She’s at a soccer practice right now.” The man stated, “She should be there for another hour if you want to meet her there.”
“Ok thanks!” said Moirae signaling for us to head towards the school.
We walked all the way to Newbury high and towards the soccer fields when I was hit with a familiar sensation. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner, but soccer practice meant that Yuuki would be nearby.
I sighed heavily when I caught a glimpse of him. “What’s wrong?” Moirae asked me.
“Nothing, I’m just really not wanting to be here right now.” I replied. I wasn’t in the mood to list all of the reasons why I’d rather place myself anywhere else but here.
When we spotted Andrea we headed straight towards her general direction. We didn’t want to interrupt her practice, but we wanted to make sure that she knew we were there. We were probably in the stands for five minutes when she saw and acknowledged us, and we were probably there another fifteen minutes when I noticed him notice me. I could have spent the entire day, no, the entire year, without Yuuki noticing me and have been completely happy.
About thirty minutes after arriving, the boy’s soccer team was given a rest period. Yuuki met up with Stanton, Zane, and Leon for a few moments, then all four of then headed towards us.
“Hi Zane!” yelled Kyrene happily, waving at Zane.
“Hey there! What brings you here on a Saturday?” Zane asked Kyrene as they all approached. He seemed so interested to see Kyrene that he completely ignored the rest of us.
“We have something to tell Andrea…” Kyrene answered with a shy smile.
“I see-” Zane managed to say before Yuuki interrupted.
“Was it necessary for all of you to come along?” he asked harshly, putting his attention on me.
The way he looked at me just then got me upset. “If you have something to say, then say it” I told him.
Yuuki glared at me with a huge dislike for a moment, I couldn’t tell if he was trying to think of something else to say or if he was just interested in watching me squirm.
“Whoa, calm down kiddies…” said Stanton cutting in. “I don’t think we’ve all met each other,” he continued with his attention on me. It was clearly obvious that he was trying to change the subject. “I’m Stanton, this Leon, this is Zane, and I’m going to assume that you already know Yuuki.”
I turned my attention away from Yuuki and towards Stanton, hoping the new topic would lesson my anger. But it was useless. The anger was only replaced by a sense of uneasiness from remembering the last time I saw Stanton; when I was a cat.
“I’m Cerady, it’s nice to meet all of you” I replied trying to play off my sweetest smile.
“So do you have any plans today?” asked Leon who was now putting his attention towards Kyrene.
“Uh… well…” Kyrene began, panicked, and then looked to Moirae for help.
Moirae caught Kyrene’s silent plea, “We’re going to talk to Andrea first then see what happens from there.”
“I see, so you have no immediate plans then?” he continued, “why don’t we all go do something together?”
“What?!” Yuuki and I both shrieked at the same time. I looked over at him with what I call my ‘death glare’ and noticed he was giving one back. I turned my head to the side to signify that I wanted nothing to do with him.
“Uh… kay…” said Leon slowly, followed by a heavy sigh. “What is it with you two? You barely know each other and yet you get along like you were sworn enemies all of your life.”
“He started it.” I stated, even if it did sound a little childish, it was the truth.
“I started it?!” snapped Yuuki taken aback. “You’re the one who ran into me first!”
“It was an accident! You’re the one who got all huffy because I did, even after I apologized!” I argued.
“That’s because you should be paying more attention to where you’re going!” He yelled back.
“I’m not perfect, and how was I to know you were going to be right behind me?” I yelled.
“Heh… yeah we know you’re not perfect” he replied kind of lightly.
There was no use hiding it, not only was I angry, but now I was deeply offended. My first instinct was to walk away in a flurry, but instead I felt something click, and a sphere of light appeared in front of me.
“What?!” was the only thing I could process in my mind before I caught myself and looked up at everyone to see that they were all royally freaked out. “Calm down… Calm down…” I closed my eyes and thought as I tried to suppress whatever it was that clicked.
It resided, whatever it was, I felt it disappear. I opened my eyes and everyone was looking at me just as confused as they were scared a moment ago. This time, I really didn’t know what to do, and as I always do in these situations, I ran away.
