Chapter 5 – Moirae’s Light

I woke up sometime around the middle of the night to be face to face with a still sleeping Yuuki. He still looked as sweet and as comforting as he had when I first drifted off to sleep; only this time it felt like we were closer.

I took a look around to see nothing had changed, but it still felt like something was different than usual. When I went to scratch my nose, I noticed what it was; I was human again.

Suddenly my heart sank and a sense of dread over-powered everything. “If Yuuki wakes up,” I thought, “I’m in big trouble!”

“How can I explain this? Where will I begin? Would he believe me? There’s no way he would! I have to get out of here…” I kept thinking, “The door! He left it cracked open before bed… If I can make it to it, I can just leave through the door…”

It wasn’t easy. It’s the middle of the night now, and that meant that there was a lot of time for him to move around in his sleep. His arms were now around me, his blankets on top and around me, and the room was so very silent… “What a predicament I’m in!” I cried.

Very carefully and very slowly, I inched my way out of his arms, through the bed sheets, and rolled off the side of the bed onto the floor. Yuuki tossed. I waited a few moments until I felt he fell back asleep, and lightly walked towards the cracked balcony doors.

The balcony was on the second floor, this presented a problem getting down. Luckily on one side of his balcony, the walls were covered with a type of up-right plant. I’ve never been good differentiating plants from each other, but I guess it was some type of wall ivy. Whatever it was, it provided me with a means to the ground.

Now on the ground, and in safe territory, I found myself looking up at the balcony. “I can’t believe I made it out of there” I thought with the biggest sigh of relief. Now all that was left, was to get home as quickly as possible, “I’m still in my P.J’s!”

. . . . . .

Luck was really on my side that night. Mom wasn’t home when I got home, I wasn’t caught, and I’m back to my normal self. If everything that just happened hadn’t taken an entire day, where I slept many times and woke up just as many of those times, I’d believe it was all just a dream.

The next day at school was hard. I did my best to avoid Yuuki and his roommates at all costs. Unfortunately, that was easier said than done because the student council’s meeting room was next to my locker. So everyday after school, when a meeting was scheduled, I saw him walk by. And if I recalled correctly, his meeting yesterday was rescheduled for today.

Despite what I had to look forward to after school (not really), I still had to get through the day first. At lunch time Yuuki and his group sat within my staring range. All I had to do was look up and there they were. Out of all the days to sit near me, why today?

Moirae was at school today, thank goodness. We met in the hall where she told me that she had something she wanted to share with me about yesterday, just as I had my story to share with her. We decided to meet at lunch, and just as Moirae and I sat down, Kyrene and Andrea joined us.

“You guys!” Andrea screamed in alarm, “Yesterday was bizarre!

“For me too!” Kyrene added.

“What?” I questioned as I looked at Moirae.

“Did either of you… uh… change?” Moirae asked in a whisper.

“You knew?” Andrea replied kind of shocked.

“Yeah, well, no, not really. It’s just… I did” Moirae said hesitantly.

“So it wasn’t just me then?!” I questioned in relief. The three girls shook their heads. “That’s crazy! But I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. It’s hard being a cat!” I said as relieved and excited as I could get without yelling too loud. “And you know, cats and doors are not good combinations.”

“You were a cat?” Kyrene asked a little disappointed. “I was a lousy turtle!”

“I was a canary, it is not easy flying, let me tell you. My arms are still tired” Moirae added.

“I beat you all, I was a chameleon! Although, it was really hard to move around. I felt like someone was going to step on me the whole day.” Andrea said with a strange sense of confidence.

“As far as days go, I think I win” I stated bluntly. “You try going through a day of being chased by little girls, stupid dogs, and then end up being handled by teenage boys.”

The three girls just looked at me in confusion. I could tell I’d have to go into detail on this one.

. . . . . .

The entire lunch period we exchanged our stories. They had a few similarities, for example: All of us woke up as different creatures, and then woke up the next night as humans again. We concluded that we were probably in form for twenty-four hours, but why we were was still a mystery.

“Don’t you guys find it weird though?” I asked the girls after a lot of thought. “First a strange man appears, tells us some strange stuff, and then disappears. Then quickly after, I start getting these weird feelings; and I only seem to get these feelings whenever Yuuki is near.”

I looked over at Yuuki’s table, he and Stanton seemed to be having a disagreement again. “And what’s up with him anyways? He lives with three guys, and if that’s not weird enough, each of you has a crush on one of them” I added.

“You’re thinking too much into it,” Andrea said, “It’s probably just a coincidence.”

“A coincidence?” I asked with a fake laugh. “Look, there are four of us, and four of them. You like Leon, Kyrene likes Zane, Moirae likes Stanton, and I get that freaky feeling when I see Yuuki. It’s like we’re partnering with them, and you think it’s just a coincidence?” I looked at all three girls, all of them were trying to hear me out.

“And… that’s weird,” I tried to recall, “I remember hearing Stanton say something about ‘partners’ while I was in their house. You can’t tell me that that is also a coincidence.”

“So, you’re saying you want to be partners with Yuuki?” Andrea asked with a smirk.

“No!” I shook my head furiously, “No! He can’t be my partner! He’s rude and sarcastic, he’s blunt and serious…” I paused to let out a sigh, “but…he was different when I was a cat. Almost kind of sweet…“ I added reluctantly.

“Don’t fall for him now” Moirae teased.

“Whatever…” I said as I tried to shrug off the thought of him being my ‘partner’.

. . . . . .

A couple hours later school ended. I was at my locker, rushing through my things so I could leave quickly. I was trying to avoid him, I mean, how could I face him after what happened yesterday?

I thought I was doing pretty well, I was taking out my last book, and I really believed I could make it in time… wrong. Suddenly that feeling appeared, and so did he. He stopped in front of my locker and glared at me for a moment.

“What?” I asked coldly. He no longer intimidated me, if anything, he just made me angry.

He continued to stare at me, replied with “nothing” and then walked away.

“Hey!” I cried out after him, but he never turned around. I was furious, “What nerve!” I yelled as I threw my last book into my book-bag.

. . . . . .

I began walking home, but today Moirae was with me. We decided we were going to investigate the park, then go back to my house to review. Something was going on and it involved us in some way, so we wanted to know what, and why.

The park was beautiful as always, but nothing seemed unordinary or suspicious. Both of us were disappointed, but we didn’t give up that easily. We walked around for about thirty-five minutes, until we were certain there was nothing. No clues, no signs, no strange man, no nothing. We began heading to my house when Moirae shouted with alarm.

“What’s that?!” she asked as she pointed towards a… I’m not sure what it was. It almost looked like a shadow that had taken on a three-dimensional form. I couldn’t bring myself to comprehend what it was, so I just observed the creature in awe.

It floated towards a tall and skinny lady with long black hair. It stood directly in front of her, but she did nothing. Couldn’t she see it?

The shadow held out what appeared to be arms and began taking on the form and appearance of the lady. As the shadow transformed, its overall appearance became lighter, and the lady’s appearance dimmed.

What happened next left me gasping for air; the lady shrunk and became a tiny sphere. The sphere was clear, with a light within it that was dimming more by the moment. I remember subconsciously asking myself, “Was that the lady… or her soul?”

Then just as instantly as the lady became a sphere of dimming light, the shadow swallowed that sphere.

“Moirae…” I began to ask, but it was hard to find my voice. “What… just happened?”

Moirae shook her head back and forth, I could tell she was in shock too. “I don’t know…” She looked around the park and then back to me, “why aren’t they panicking? Didn’t anyone else see that other than us?”

I looked around too, in disbelief, but no one acted any different than before. Did they really not see anything?!

“What’s going on?! What do we do?!” I panicked.

“I don’t know!” Moirae cried, “This can’t be happening, it has to be a joke!”

“Was changing into a cat and bird a joke?” I questioned her. “Let’s just… follow it for a while. Maybe this won’t be as bad as we’re making it.” I added hopefully.

“Ok” Moirae agreed.

“We began following the shadow-lady… thing, and continued to follow it for fifteen to twenty minutes. At this point it walked into a grocery store. Until now it wasn’t acting abnormal, but once inside the store, all hell broke loose.

The shadow was conjuring black orbs from nothing, and throwing them at people in the store. As the people were running and trying to dodge the orbs, they flew past and hit shelves and displays. The store was becoming increasingly dangerous by the second.

“This is bad” Moirae said, pointing out the obvious, as we hid behind a register.

“No kidding! Now what? We can’t just keep following it and hoping it doesn’t do anything!” I yelled in a hushed tone.

“Stop asking me! I don’t know what to do either! It was your idea to follow that thing!” Moirae yelled back quietly.

“Well help me out here,” I looked around the store for anything that could help us. “First we have to stop it or slow it down.”

“But how? It’s not like we can shoot it, and if we go how do we know the lady inside wont get hurt?” Moirae asked.

I made a little growl “That blasted man could have given us better information!” I looked around the store again and heard a blood curdling scream. A young woman with brown hair was just hit with one of the orbs. She flew backwards and laid lifeless on the floor. That was it, I had to something, anything.

I ran out from behind the register and towards a stand of apples that had been knocked over. I picked up a couple of the apples and started throwing them at the shadow-lady. The shadow-lady stumbled over and tried to regain its balance. I threw some more but it wasn’t long till it conjured a couple orbs and threw them at me.

I dodged the first one just barely, but was hit head on by the second. I just remember feeling like I was hit by something blunt and being flown back into a wall. It hurt so bad I couldn’t move, and my vision was getting blurry.

“Cerady!” Moirae screamed. “Cerady!” she cried again and ran over to where I was.

“Run…” I tried to say, but I couldn’t tell if I said it aloud or not. Everything was moving in slow motion. I watched as the shadow-lady conjured more orbs and prepared to throw them at Moirae, who had just reached my side.

“Run…” I tried to say again, this time I managed to fully say the words.

“But…” Moirae started to say, but was interrupted by an orb that flew past her head. She looked over at the shadow-lady as it was preparing to throw another orb.

“Go!” I screamed with urgency.

“No!” Moirae yelled back stubbornly. She stood up and walked in front of me, then held out her arms, acting as a shield.

What happened next was a blur. The shadow-lady threw another orb and suddenly a light appeared before Moirae that engulfed the black orb. The light split into two spheres, each went straight to Moirae’s hands.

I watched as Moirae clutched the lights in each hand, and in each hand a dagger appeared.

Both daggers were the same. The blades were triangular and the tips of them were lined red, as if dipped in something. The shape of the hilts looked easy to control without losing the ability to keep your grip. They were red and orange in color with gold and silver embossing. In size, I’d say the daggers were near a foot long each.

Moirae looked down at the daggers in amazement. I could tell she was confused, even I was confused. Where did they come from? How did they appear? Why did they appear? In a swift motion she grasped the daggers and held them up to defend herself. There was no time to ask questions, only time to act.

The shadow-lady now looked uneasy and began to generate more black orbs. Then it started throwing them at Moirae just as quickly as they were generated. Each time an orb came close, Moirae sliced through it with her daggers.

One by one, all of the people within the store cleared out. Some were injured, some were shaken, and some were just incredibly lucky. I could hear sirens in the background, they were far and faint, but they were definitely heading here.

With each orb destroyed, the angrier the shadow-lady became. Finally Moirae looked back to face me “Are you ok? Can you move?” she asked quickly.

I gave a nod, I could move, but what was she planning?

“When I give the signal, I want you to run” She said facing back towards the shadow-lady.

“Run where?” I asked her while trying to regain my senses.

“Anywhere away from here.” Moirae added as she cut through a few more black orbs.

“What about you?” I asked her anxiously, she didn’t expect me to just leave her here, did she?

“I’ll be right behind you.” She said sternly.

“Ok…” I agreed reluctantly.

Moirae sliced through an orb with her left dagger, then shifted her right dagger so that the flat side hit the orb. The orb bounced off of her dagger and flew back towards the shadow-lady, hitting her dead on.

The shadow-lady fell backwards, “Now!” Moirae screamed. I hopped to my feet and ran as fast as I could towards the exit. I turned around and saw Moirae running after me. The shadow-lady was stumbling to its feet but was having a hard time maintaining its balance. There were fruits and vegetables everywhere on the floor around it.

We eventually reached the exit and ran straight into the nearest alleyway. We hid behind a stairway trying to catch our breath and watched as three police cars pulled up to the building.

“We should get out of here…” Moirae said, now looking down at her daggers.

“Yeah, good idea,” I agreed with her, “this way,” I added as I directed us out of the alleyway and towards my house.
