Powers of Kirin - Being Written by Jennifer Rinehart
A week passed by quickly, and although it was bizarre in many senses, I’m finally beginning to forget that night in the park. Instead, it’s like my troubles have been replaced with a new obstacle, in the form of a seventeen year old boy.
Last week I was rushing out of my classroom to reach my favorite local fabric store... when I ran into him; Yuuki Tsukimori. I had no idea who he was at the time, though I should have. I asked Moirae about him the day after the encounter with him in the hallway. Shocked to hear I never heard about him, she filled me in with some details.
“He’s the star player on our male soccer team, Vice President on the student council, and every girl wants to date him.” she said “Well, every girl except me.”
“That’s not true” added Andrea who had just walked up. “I have my sights on someone else, but it is true that he’s popular with the girls. You’ll eventually see what I mean.”
Andrea and Moirae offered to walk me around campus at lunch to show me what all the hype was. When lunch came around, we met up with Kyrene who was reading by herself at a table in the corner of our cafeteria. Interested in my learning expedition, she asked if she could join us.
The four of us walked around the school, looking in all directions for Yuuki. We eventually found him between the school’s gardening club greenhouse and a small outside garden. He wasn’t alone, but was with three other boys.
“He’s mine” Andrea said, as she pointed to the boy with brown hair and teal eyes. “His name is Leon Horatiu, and he’s the sweetest guy you will ever meet” she gushed with a longing in her eyes.
Moirae looked at Andrea in misbelief for a moment, and then proceeded to explain, “You know about Yuuki already, to the left of him is Leon Horatiu.” she glanced at Andrea then continued “Leon is Newbury’s newspaper editor. To the right of Yuuki is Zane Naois, the ka-ra-te master” Moirae said, in a sarcastic how amazing tone.
Zane had a powerful aura to him, but his looks didn’t seem special in any way. His hair was dark brown and his eyes were an average brown. But I guess it’s that sense of power that attracts attention to him.
“You don’t have to say it like that…” argued Kyrene. “He’s really not that bad once you get to know him…”
“Well it’s obvious who you like, Kyrene.” Moirae argued back. “Anyways,” she continued, “To the right of Zane is Stanton Dalsiel, he’s intelligent with computers and trains horses. You should see the stables he works at and the horses he trains, they’re so pretty! And he doesn’t just train them well, he rides them well too.”
I couldn’t help but giggle at Moirae, “It sounds like you have some interest in Stanton.” I teased. Moirae gave a slight smile, shrugged and looked back in Stanton’s direction.
Stanton was the same height as Yuuki with light brown hair and amber colored eyes. His hair was short, a little longer than ear length, with an interesting left-sided feather-like effect over the top of his head.
“So what are these guys? The ‘populars’ of the school or something?” I asked, “If even you three are interested them, then I can only imagine the rest of the school girls.”
“Yeah, they’re pretty popular with the girls, but, none of them have ever had a girlfriend since I’ve known them. Not one! Kinda makes you wonder, ya know?” said Andrea. Moirae shrugged her shoulders and Kyrene shook her head to signify she didn’t know anything either.
Lunch ended and school was over already. I was removing my books from my locker, when I got that indescribable feeling again. Figures when I least expected it, he would appear again.
“Daydreaming again I see,” said Yuuki as he was passing by; he stopped for a moment and added “Pay attention to your surroundings this time, we don’t need an accident in the hallway.” and started to walk away.
I was surprised, “What the hell?” was the first thing that came to mind, but “I beg your pardon?” was the first thing out of my mouth.
He stopped again, and turned around. This time, he was looking at me like he couldn’t believe I just retaliated against his remark.
I fell nervous and fumbled for words, what was I doing? He’s the Vice President of the student council for crying out loud! “It was a one time thing, your judgment is unfair.” I argued while trying to maintain my composure.
“Whatever, just don’t let it happen again.” He said very bluntly and this time completely walked away.
Now, feeling offended, I gathered up the rest of my books and started walking home.
. . . . . .
Later that evening, after I had finished all of my homework, I decided a visit to the park would do me some good. The sun was going to set soon, making the park an ideal place to practice my violin. I feel I always draw my best musical potential in the still air surrounding an open and natural environment. So with my music sheets and violin in hand, I headed out to the park.
It was perfect. The sun was still midway in the sky, the birds were chirping gently, and best of all, there was no one around. I took out my violin and my music sheets, and began to play. That evening I allowed myself to become lost in my music. It had been so long since I was able to play this freely. I started practicing the violin when I was only seven years old, around the time my Father’s career picked up in Egypt. I guess I tried to substitute it as a replacement for the time lost with him, as sad as that is. But for whatever the reason was, even as time goes by, I continue to love this instrument and the melodies it plays.
Time passed and the sun began to set. I didn’t think anything of it… until I got that feeling. Just what was ‘this’ feeling? It’s been occurring constantly over the past week, and leaving almost just as instantly as it came. I lowered my violin and took a look around, feeling as if maybe someone was there. Sure enough, he was there.
Yuuki… the guy that almost a quarter of Newbury’s female students adore, the same guy who never gave me a chance to redeem myself, the guy who turns my insides out, with no disregard towards my feelings… was now looking at me as if I just shot a gun and missed him by a hair. “Why?” I asked myself. “Why does he always appear when I least expect it?”
I’ll admit I was angry, because I didn’t want to see him. I didn’t want him to know. He saw me play my violin, he heard me play my violin; the one thing I had that I was able to keep all to myself. “What do I do?” I remember thinking. The same guy that criticizes my every action and drives me up the wall, has now discovered my vulnerability. I can’t let him get away with this…
“Is something wrong?” I asked him. “Why did I just ask him that?” I thought afterwards.
Before he could reply, I turned around, and placed my violin and my music sheets back into their case. He just stared at me… what was his problem? Without thinking about it, I glanced at him, picked up my case, and started walking away.
“Hey!” he shouted after me, but way too panicked to turn around, let alone turn back, I ran straight ahead, all the way home.
